Building refurbishment in both demo cities is a central subject to achieve the SINFONIA goal of saving 40 to 50 % of primary energy in the smart districts. In total, more the 100,000 m² of living surface were refurbished in the framework of SINFONIA. Four building owners were involved – the City of Bolzano and the Institute for Social Housing in Bolzano, the Neue Heimat Tirol and Innsbrucker Immobiliengesellschaft in Innsbruck.

100,000 m² of residential and public buildings from the 30s-80s are retrofitted to improve indoor quality and comfort, energy performance, and to reduce final energy demand by up to 80% while ensuring cost effectiveness and minimal impact on tenants.

Refurbishment measures include:

  • Building envelope insulation (insulation, windows, thermal bridges,etc.)
  • Ventilation system with high efficiency heat recovery
  • Integration of renewable energy sources on-site (PV, solarthermal, heatpumps)
  • Additional storeys using innovative timber construction technologies

via-brescia

Buildings of the City of Bolzano

The City of Bolzano plans to refurbish building complexes that had an urgent need for renovation works located in Via Aslago, Via Parma and Via Passeggiata dei Castani. A total of 219 apartments will undergo renovation to reduce energy consumption and increase the use of energy from renewable sources. 14 new apartments will be built in via Aslago, adding a floor to the building by means of a wooden structure. The 3 buildings in Via Parma will be connected to the remote heating network and here too, 16 new apartments will be built by adding a floor and new balconies.

  • Via Parma: 70 flats
  • Passeggiata dei Castani: 65 flats
  • Via Aslago: 63 flats

Buildings of the Institute for Social Housing

Three building complexes owned by IPES will also be renovated in terms of their energy efficiency and architectural layout. In total, 203 apartments will be renovated and 10 new apartments from recovering the attic floor in the building complex in Via Brescia/Via Cagliari will be built.

  • Via Brescia/Via Cagliari: 99 flats
  • Via Palermo: 35 flats
  • Via Similaun: 53 flats

Buildings of Innsbrucker Immobilien Gesellschaft

The Innsbrucker Immobilien Gesellschaft refurbished three apartment complexes and three elementary schools in the framework of SINFONIA. The school buildings are good practice examples for an energy efficient refurbishment. The schools got – amongst other things – new windows, isolation (except Siegmairstraße) and a comfort ventialtion system. In order to actively involve and sensitize the users of the school buildings local SINFONIA partners developed a school workshops program.
